Curriculum
The objective of the fellowship is to provide fellows with the educational opportunity to become knowledgeable and competent in the practice and principles of the care of athletes from the perspective of the orthopaedic surgeon. While placing emphasis on developing the necessary decision making and surgical skills required in Sports Medicine, this fellowship provides the framework for fellows to develop competence in the physical examination of injuries to the musculoskeletal system, establishing treatment algorithms and performing necessary surgical interventions. In addition to working with three of the most experienced members of the Philadelphia Sports Medicine community, an essential and important aspect of this fellowship is the educational opportunities afforded by the close interaction with experienced athletic trainers caring for teams at all levels from high school to professional teams. The fellows work with therapists and athletic trainers also in establishing and overseeing rehabilitative programs for the injured athletes engaged in a wide variety of sports. Adhering to the educational framework of the ACGME policies/ guidelines and core competencies, our post-residency training program builds on the principles learned in residency while permitting the fellows to think independently and interact with the staff, attendings, athletic trainers, coaches, athletes and their family members to further develop necessary skills in the field. While being supervised at all times, the fellow is afforded the opportunity to evaluate athletes in the office and training room environments and to serve as an educator for students and residents. The fellows will be given opportunities to perform clinical and/or basic science research and are expected to complete a project suitable for publication by the end of the fellowship year. The rotations under the direction of the various orthopaedic surgery attendings are designed to expose the fellow to a variety of surgical experiences and approaches. At the completion of their training, the fellows should be prepared to function independently and at the highest level as a superbly trained and knowledgeable sports medicine surgeon.

FELLOW EVALUATION
Evaluation of the fellow’s progress throughout the year is an important aspect of this fellowship experience and to that end, feedback is on-going between the fellow and faculty. Fellows will meet on a regular basis with the Program Director, Dr. Arthur Bartolozzi to discuss progress. Written evaluations are completed by the faculty at the end of each rotation, semi-annually and as a final summative upon completion of the program. Fellows are also asked to complete evaluations on each faculty member as well as the program.
